What We Believe
A Protestant Faith Rooted in Scripture
Methodism is a branch of Protestant Christianity that traces its heritage back to John Wesley and his attempts to bring revival within the Church of England in the early 18th century. Methodism holds many of the basic Protestant Christian beliefs, including the inspiration and authority of scripture for faith and practice, the doctrines of the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus, and the necessity of grace to save humans from the consequences of sin.
The Wesleyan Way
Wesley taught that Christians should strive to obtain holiness of life — called "perfect love" — with the assistance of the Holy Spirit. He established a system of small group meetings designed to encourage and support fellow Christians in lives of faith. Wesley and the early Methodists were particularly concerned about inviting people to experience God's grace and to grow in their knowledge and love of God through disciplined Christian living. They placed primary emphasis on Christian living — on putting faith and love into action.
Core Values
Some of the core values of the Methodist Church are evangelism, the Wesleyan tradition, spiritual growth, mission, and inclusiveness. Five areas of focus guide our work: developing a new generation of Christian leaders, planting new churches for new people in new places and transforming existing churches, working with the poor to eliminate poverty, and eradicating killer diseases — especially HIV/AIDS and malaria.
